Nintendo has released a statement to CVG clarifying the situation regarding region restrictions for the newly announced Nintendo DSi. The bad news is that there will be region locking. The good news is that this will only be applied to DSi specific titles.
“DSi software (software that is only compatible with DSi) is region locked, eg: European DSi software can only be played on European DSi consoles,” said a Nintendo spokesperson.
This will include both DSi specific cartridge games and downloadable games from the DSi Store.
The statement added: “DSi is region locked because DSi embeds net communication functionality within itself and we are intending to provide net services specifically tailored for each region.”
It’s not all bad news though; current and future Nintendo DS games will continue to work without any region restrictions.
“Nintendo DS software however is region free so you can play any DS software on DSi from any region. You can also browse the Internet on your DSi wherever you are in the world and exchange your photos with friends from around the world,” explained the Nintendo statement.
The Nintendo DSi is scheduled for release on November 1 in Japan, spring 2009 across Europe and at some point following April 09 in the Americas.
