The Wii U Virtual Console will be expanded to include Nintendo DS titles, Nintendo has announced.

“We are now sure that we can solve the technical problem of displaying Virtual Console software from Nintendo DS on the GamePad,” explained Nintendo president Satoru Iwata during this morning’s corporate management policy meeting.

He added: “The dual-screen Nintendo DS, one of which is a touch screen, has a very strong software lineup, and so we plan to add the Virtual Console titles from Nintendo DS software to the future Virtual Console lineup for Wii U.”

Nintendo hasn’t said when the first DS titles will be released via the Virtual Console.

Whilst horizontal orientated DS software appears to be a natural fit for the GamePad screen, games designed to be played in the handheld’s regular vertical stacked screens arrangement might cause issues with the controller layout.
