The game’s full title will be Dragon Quest IX: Defender of the Starry Sky, and the talented people at Level 5 (Dragon Quest VIII) are handling development.

The first screens, found on the Famitsu website, reveal that the game will take the series into full 3D for the first time on the DS. It’s also been revealed that the game will feature four-player co-op, although at this time it’s not confirmed to be online using Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

Although only just announced, the game is said to be quite a long way along in development, but at the moment no firm release date other than 2007 in Japan has been announced.

Fans of the series without a DS might want to think about picking one up. According to series creator Yuji Horii, the game will be “a true part of the series” and not simply a spin-off. Not one to miss out on then.
