The Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of upcoming PC RPG Dragon Age: Origins will be released after the PC version, BioWare has confirmed to VideoGamer.com.
Speaking in an interview to be published at a later date, lead designer Brent Knowles confirmed that the spiritual successor to Baldur’s Gate will come out on the Xbox 360 and the PS3 after the PC version, slated for an early 2009 release, but he couldn’t confirm exactly how long after.
Earlier today it was revealed that the November issue of US mag Game Informer will include an “exclusive first look at the console editions” of Dragon Age Origins. When we asked Knowles about this this afternoon, he said: “Yes it will show up on the consoles after the PC release at some point.”
Pushed on when the game will come out on consoles, Knowles added: “I can’t speak to the time frame.”
He did, however, explain why the developer was making a console version of the previously announced PC exclusive RPG, pointing towards the success of Mass Effect on Xbox 360 as justification of the move.
“We’re smart,” he told VideoGamer.com. “We think about these things a lot and we know that the console market is an important market as well. And it just makes sense. There’s not a lot of RPGs like this available for console players. There’s a lot of people that the console is their primary gaming platform, they aren’t playing on PC. The reaction to Mass Effect for example, was huge, it was phenomenal. We know there’s an audience out there for this Western style RPG and we want to make sure we deliver to them a good, strong fantasy RPG. They’re going to have a lot of fun with it. We’ve kept consoles in mind throughout the development cycle so I think we’re going to have a really strong offering to the console players.”
So there you have it console fans, Dragon Age Origins is heading your way, but you’re going to have to wait till after it’s out on PC, about which Knowles couldn’t offer us anything firmer than “early 2009”. But you can always check out our preview of the game right here.
