Dragon Age Inquisition mage Dorian is the first “fully gay character” lead writer David Gaider has had the opportunity to write, an interview on dragonage.com has revealed.
“He is, in fact, the first fully gay character I’ve had the opportunity to write,” said Gaider. “It added an interesting dimension to his back story, considering he comes from a place where “perfection” is the face that every mage puts on and anything that smacks of deviancy is shameful and meant to be hidden.
“Dorian’s refusal to play along with that façade is seen as stubborn and pointless by his family, which has contributed to his status as a pariah.”
Gaider acknowledges that Dorian will be “controversial in some corners”.
He added: “It made writing Dorian a very personal experience for me, and I’m hopeful that will make him seem like a fully realized character to fans in the end.”
Dorian is also described by Gaider as being too smart for his own good, raised in a society where intelligence and wit were essential if you had desires to advance yourself socially.
He’s also equipped with an arsenal of magical powers and isn’t afraid to use them. This includes elemental spells, as well as spells which can seize control of spirits and the dead – controversial practices frowned upon by the majority of society.
Dragon Age Inquisition launches October 10 for Xbox One, PS4, PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.
Gaider has been criticised for his “fully gay” phrasing and addressed this on Twitter, noting he did not intend to comment on bisexuality, and will leave it at that”. We have a feeling the debate won’t end there.
