Both Dragon Age 3: Inquisition and the next Mass Effect will use the Frostbite 3 engine, BioWare has confirmed.

BioWare Edmonton and Montreal general manager Aaryn Flynn confirmed the news in a tweet last night, following speculation that the two titles may use DICE’s older Frostbite 2 engine.

“For everyone who’s been asking after the #BF4 reveal, #DA3 and the next Mass Effect are also using Frostbite 3. It’s awesome”.

Frostbite 3 was announced during Battlefield 4’s reveal earlier this week.

The engine is designed to offer “hundreds of different improvements” over Frostbite 2, including improved animation systems, physics and lighting, and take advantage of “multi-core” platforms.

As with Battlefield 4, however, it seems like neither Dragon Age 3 or Mass Effect will be coming to Wii U, with DICE’s executive producer Patrick Bach telling Eurogamer that the Frostbite engine is not currently compatible with Nintendo’s console.

“We right now don’t have support for the Wii U in the Frostbite engine,” he said. “The reason for that is it takes development time. What should we focus on to create the best possible Battlefield experience? We are now focused on PC and the current-gen platforms, and then there might be other platforms in the future that we can’t talk about…”

Frostbite 3 is expected to debut with Battlefield 4 this autumn.
