Downton Abbey, Doctor Who, Sherlock and soaps draw in millions over Christmas

The biggest festive hit on UK TV screens was BBC’s Sherlock: The Abominable Bride, which scored 8.4 million live viewers on New Year’s Day.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman returned as Holmes and Watson to snare a 34.7 per cent share of the live audience.

ITV’s two-hour Downton Abbey finale pulled in 6.9 million live viewers on Christmas Day, with an additional 4 million catchup viewers coming since.

Other shows of note over the holiday included Mrs Brown’s Boys with 9.49 million consolidated viewers, Call the Midwife with 9.3 million, Doctor Who (7.69 million), War and Peace (6.3 million) and the three-part adaptation of And Then There Were None which averaged 5.5 million viewers.

Brits also love a bit of Christmas misery, with the major soaps Eastenders and Coronation Street bringing cheer to 7.66 million and 7.27 million viewers on Christmas Day.
