Doom 4’s troubled development now sees the title being given another – perhaps final – chance on next generation consoles, sources have told Kotaku.

At QuakeCon last year id co-founder John Carmack said the game would be “done when it’s done” and according to sources this may be some way off.

“[id was] never even close to a shipped product,” said a source. “A half dozen mediocre levels was the most [id] had to show.”

“It’s not going well,” said another source. “Poor management, poor organisation… [id] just couldn’t nail down design… It’s just a mess.”

Two sources have told Kotaku that after years of development with little to show, ZeniMax has issued id with an ultimatum: start delivering or face the consequences.

Rumours suggest that one consequence could see id shut down if Doom 4 isn’t ready to ship within the next year, but others have said this is unlikely. More plausible would be focussing id on the continued development of technology such as id Tech 5, for use on multiple projects within ZeniMax.

For the time being Bethesda is publicly supporting the game, telling Kotaku: “id refocused its efforts on a new version of Doom 4 that promises to meet the very high expectations everyone has for this game and this franchise. When we’re ready to talk about the Doom 4 Id is making, we will let folks know.”

The continued development of Doom 4 is backed up by another Kotaku source: “They really believe that if they can get the internal strife and disorganization ironed out, Doom 4 has a lot of value… What eventually emerges could be anyone’s guess.”

QuakeCon 2013 is confirmed for August 1-4, but will we hear anything about Doom 4?
