Doom 4 remains in development, but the franchise’s creator and id Software co-founder John Carmack was unable to speak about the game at QuakeCon last week.

“I can’t,” Carmack responded during a QuakeCon Q&A when asked to offer an update on Doom 4. “I actually asked about whether I could say anything related to the development, and the answer was, no, I couldn’t.”

Development of Doom 4 has been off the radar since April when the game’s reboot for next-gen was announced.

“An earlier version of Doom 4 did not exhibit the quality and excitement that id and Bethesda intend to deliver and that Doom fans worldwide expect,” said Bethesda’s VP of PR and marketing Pete Hines. “As a result, id refocused its efforts on a new version of Doom 4 that promises to meet the very high expectations everyone has for this game and this franchise.”

id Software creative director Tim Willits says the radio silence on Doom 4 has helped the development team remain focussed, and suggested good progress is being made.

“That was one of the reasons why Pete [Hines] said that,” Willits told Polygon at QuakeCon 2013. “We got together and said, ‘Let’s say one thing, let’s make it official, because people love to write whatever they can find and twist it around.’ But internally, even internally, we’re much more focused. Which, you know what, when you have everybody marching to the same drummer, you tend to get some stuff done, which is good.”

The wait for Doom 4 continues, but given the heavy delay do fans still have high expectations for the sequel?
