With Larian having announced its departure from the Baldur’s Gate IP now, there’s little you can do to keep your characters alive. Sure, you can replay it over and over again, but the core story is finished. With no expansions coming either, imagination is the only real solution. Thankfully, Dungeon and Dragon’s new virtual tabletop lets you incorporate your BG3 characters into your own RPG campaigns.

Announced at a press panel at GenCon 2024, Baldur’s Gate 3’s signature party members are being transitioned over to Project Sigil, the code-name for D&D’s upcoming tabletop sim. Astarion and Karlach were a few of the notable characters showcased, while it’s likely that the rest of the cast will arrive soon too.

I can’t speak for all, but with Larian no longer involved much in the Baldur’s Gate franchise, I’d rather the storytelling be left in the hands of independent dungeon masters rather than Wizards of the Coast themselves. “A lot of people are worried about what [WotC]’s going to do with BG3 characters and the story,” game director Kale Stutzman said, reaffirming my initial thoughts.

Project Sigil is going to be baked into DnD Beyond; a way to cover as many platforms as possible without needing physical die, boards, and miniatures. From the footage on display, it’s going to include an Unreal Engine 4 powered map-building engine, alongside miniatures equipped with spells and animation.

Wizards of the Coast are pursuing more of a future with the digital side of gaming. Hasbro’s recent financial report confirms that, alongside recent collaborations with other franchises including Dead by Daylight. With Project Sigil looking like the most intriguing and interactive of the bunch, incorporating the incredible characters from Larian’s game is no doubt an attractive offering. I know I’m going to be eager to play the beta when it’s ready later this year.

While there’s no release date for Project Sigil – or whatever it’s going to be officially called – yet, it’s one of the most exciting prospects lined up for Wizards of the Coast at the moment.
