Free-to-play action RPG Marvel Heroes is being closed down after Marvel, under the haus of maus Disney, announced they are to end their eight-year relationship with developers Gazillion Entertainment.

In a e-mail to Kotaku, a representative of Marvel wrote: ‘We regret to inform our Marvel Heroes fans that we have ended our relationship with Gazillion Entertainment, and that the Marvel Heroes games will be shut down. We would like to sincerely thank the players who joined the Marvel Heroes community, and will provide any further updates as they become available.’

For their part, Gazillion Entertainment posted a statement on Twitter confirming the news, saying that real money purchases for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC title will be turned off as soon as possible, but players will be able to continue to play the game until the servers are shut off on December 31.

The game was originally known as Marvel Heroes and released on PC, before getting a year suffix attached to its name in 2005 and 2006. Then earlier this year it was released on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 under the new title Marvel Heroes Omega.

No details for the reasons of the divorce between Marvel and Gazillion have been mentioned, although given the original license was supposed to last ten years and was only signed back in 2009 it’s probably safe to say these are troubled times for the developer.  Â
