In the battle of the lucrative toys-to-life market there are two big players in Disney’s Disney Infinity and Activision’s Skylanders – but which franchise came out on top in 2014?

The answer changes depending on who’s talking.

Activision claims that its Skylanders franchise was top dog based on “NPD, GfK, and Activision internal estimates”.

“Skylanders continues its leadership position as the No.1 kids video game franchise globally as well as in the US by wide margins,” CEO Eric Hirshberg said. “As a global franchise in 2014, Skylanders is 30 per cent bigger than its nearest competitor. And Skylanders Trap Team outsold its nearest competitor globally by 17 per cent.

“As the creators of the ‘toys-to-life’ category, we are thrilled to continue to lead it for the third consecutive year.”

However, Disney argues that its game was the best-selling in the US based on NPD data. In November/December, Disney says Infinity sales were up 16 per cent year-on-year and its market share increased four per cent to 47 per cent. The House of Mouse also claims to have outsold Skylanders in revenue terms and starter pack units.

Given how many ways publishers are able to spin sales figures it’s no surprise to see both claiming to have come out on top.
