The DualShock 4’s touchpad may be used to let players throw grenades in Battlefield 4, DICE has suggested while discussing how it could use the PS4’s controller tech with OPM.

“We’ve experimented [with the touchpad], but haven’t exactly nailed how we want it to behave just yet,” said multiplayer producer Aleksander Grondal. “Obviously flicking to throw a grenade is an option. There’s a bunch of things we’re testing out – we just haven’t settled on anything.”

DICE ought to settle on the functionality soon – the game is due to launch alongside PlayStation 4 in the US in just over four weeks time. It was previously rumoured that DICE was considering using the touchpad to let players scroll through the Battlelog User interface.

It’s unclear how many other developers will decide to use the touchpad in their PS4 games, with few having discussed its functionality on record.

Killzone: Shadow Fall will use the touchpad to let players switch between drone buddy OWL’s special abilities, with Ubisoft using it to help players navigate the map.

Battlefield 4 launches on PlayStation 4 on November 29.
