The team at Eidos Montreal have come very close the original artistic vision for Deus Ex: Human Revolution, according to art director Jonathan Jacques-Belletete. Having said that, things have had to change along the course of development.

“It’s really close, in that if you look at the shopping list we did for the art direction, almost every point is there,” Belletete told Nowgamer. “Are they treated exactly the way we envisioned them at the start? Maybe not.”

The Renaissance influence did cause problems at times, causing the dev team to take an iterative approach.

“There was a point at which the Renaissance influence was way more pushed than it is now. Everything in the game, down to couches and phones, had to have some Baroque or Renaissance touch to it. Everything looked like ass, so we had to back up, it was an iteration thing,” he added.

Overall Belletete is happy with the way the game’s style has turned out.

“At the end, the point about making a cyberpunk title with Renaissance themes is there. I don’t want to have a photorealistic game – the low resolution textures, the ambient occlusion, the fog, it’s all there. I would say as a high level flavour it’s dead on what we wanted.”

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is due for release on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC on August 26.
