Destiny’s 6-player raids can only be played with people on your PSN or Xbox Live friends lists, and will not support matchmaking to join up with strangers, Bungie has revealed.

In an interview with IGN, writer Luke Smith discussed the decision and admitted that the lack of matchmaking is “a bit of a risk. Because the activity requires you to have a group of five other friends to play with.”

Raids will offer a stiffer challenge than the rest of the game, with players required to communicate in order to succeed.

“The activity is going to take you and your group of five buddies into a place that you’ve never been,” he adds. “A place that you will return to frequently. And [it will] demand of you things you’ve never even really been asked to do in a shooter before.”

Destiny will launch on September 9 on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
