Death Stranding’s difficulty settings have been confirmed in a tweet Hideo Kojima, and includes a ‘Very Easy Mode’ for fans of the star studded cast who might not be experienced with video games (via IGN).
Ayako Terashima, Kojima’s personal assistant, has played the entirety of Death Stranding using the ‘Very Easy Mode’. ‘According to my boss, this mode is for ppl who usually don’t play game [sic], movie fans or RPG fans. Normal or Hard Mode is for action game fans,’ she said.
Normally there’s only Easy Mode, but we added Very Easy Mode for movie fans since we have real actors like Norman, Mads, Lea starred in. Even Yano-san who never completed the 1st stage of PAC-MAN, was able to complete the game on Very Easy Mode https://t.co/fMZmuZltZw

‘Normally there’s only Easy Mode, but we added Very Easy Mode for movie fans,’ Kojima explained. ‘Even Yano-san [Kenji Yano] who never completed the first stage of Pac-Man, was able to complete the game on Very Easy Mode.’ He added in a separate tweet that difficulty settings can be changed at any time during a playthrough, but it will take effect from the latest save point. The Japanese Death Stranding will also come with English voice acting and subtitles.
There are no further details on what ‘Very Easy Mode’ entails, but we could imagine that it’s an equivalent to narrative mode, that dials down the danger and makes combat encounters quick and unchallenging, or removes them entirely. At first I was amused that ‘RPG fans’ were bracketed in with inexperienced players, but it’s likely that Terashima was referring to JRPGs. These often come with story modes, and take turns in combat rather than requiring the player to react in real time.
Kojima’s paranatural parenting simulator has shown us some pretty weird stuff so far, including a urination mechanic that promises a reward to players who wee on the same spot, and a lady that breastfeeds a ghost baby. We’ll see another Death Stranding trailer at the Tokyo Game Show on September 12, and it’s anyone’s guess what Kojima has in store.
Death Stranding is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 4 on November 8, and will release onto PC some time later.
