Dead Space producer Chuck Beaver has hastily shifted into reverse gear after criticising the story in Gears of War.

Last week Beaver gave an interview (now deleted) to EA’s official news blog, The Beat. As part of the discussion, Beaver gave his views on the game’s plot, stating that it “contains atrocious, offensive violations of story basics. Yet it doesn’t seem to ruin it for many, many people. It’s literally the worst writing in games, but seems to have no ill effects.”

Following the inevitable backlash from fans, Beaver released a statement to IGN, claiming he was taken out of context:

“I just wanted to jump in and clarify some of my comments that were taken out of context about Gears of War. First, let me say that I’m a huge fan. It is an epic franchise that has trail-blazed more than a few industry-leading player experiences and mechanics. It is deservedly recognized as a top-tier title.

“Its success as a property is evidenced by its giant sales and rabid fan base. The industry is far better for Epic’s contributions, and we all owe a great deal of inspiration to their work.”

Everyone’s entitled to their opinion, and I suspect that Beaver was trying to argue that Gears succeeds despite having what he views as a lousy story. Even so, he should be smart enough to know what happens when you trash-talk a big franchise.

I suspect he’ll be a bit more careful when choosing his words next time.
