Dead By Daylight Game Director and Head of Partnerships at BeHaviour Interactive, Mathieu Cote, recently and interestingly said he “can’t talk about” Friday the 13th’s Jason Voorhees. In an interview with Xbox Expansion Pass on YouTube, DBD’s Mathieu Cote said, “No, I can’t talk about that” when asked on his thoughts about Jason Voorhees suddenly becoming available and joining games like Fortnite.

While unwilling to specifically discuss Friday the 13th and Jason Voorhees, Mathieu Cote elaborated on the situation by saying, “I get what you’re trying to shine a light on and what I can say is the legal world of licenses is a cult at best”. Cote explained, “These things [IPs] change hands, these things get sued over, these things are constantly in flux and most of the legends we talk about have many different versions and some people own the whole thing and some people own a version of it or one context of the character”.

The game director added, “It is incredibly complex and everchanging… so some stuff that may have felt completely off limits is now available [but] Whether we are able or willing to use that opportunity depends”. One of the biggest concerns about the legality of licenses is released content forcibly removed, with Cote explaining, “things that were available that is now removed, that’s a bummer every time it happens because we never plan on removing content from Dead By Daylight, it’s never our decision”.

Lastly, Cote finished the discussion by warning, “It’s not because it’s available today it’s available tomorrow, so it’s very delicate”.

Dead By Daylight Fans Want Friday the 13th Chapter with Jason Voorhees Killer

It’s no secret that Friday the 13th is one of the most highly requested chapters amongst Dead By Daylight fans. Camp Crystal Lake would be an ideal map, but what people really want the most is Jason Voorhees as a Killer because he’s one of the most iconic monsters in horror history alongside his arch nemesis, Freddy Kreuger.

Due to the high demand, Mathieu Cote is asked about the possibility of Jason joining DBD every year. Cote said the “door is wide open” in 2024, and earlier this year he said, “Statistically, the probability is greater than 0%”. However, every time he’s been asked, Cote has stressed that the biggest obstacle for Friday the 13th is licensing.

Right now, ownership is split three ways. Per Deadline, Victor Miller owns the copyright to the screenplay of the first Friday the 13th film, meanwhile, New Line Cinema/Warner Bros. owns the trademarks for the Friday the 13th title and Jason Voorhees name. Lastly, Horror Inc. owns the rights to the character of Jason Voorhees, as well as rights to the sequels and global rights to the first film. Horror Inc. is running an initiative called the Jason Universe to avoid the Friday the 13th title.

While Mathieu Cote is reluctant to discuss Jason Voorhees, Dead By Daylight leaks have claimed Predator and Friday the 13th Chapters are “being worked on”. This is just a leak rather than anything official, but it comes from a source who leaked concept art of the possible March Survivor as well as female muscle queen inspired by WWE’s Rhea Ripley.
