DayZ, the zombie survival game, is moving out of alpha and introducing base building mechanics.

The game, which is developed by Bohemia Interactive, has been in alpha for a whopping five years. It is now moving into beta, and the developer is concentrating on fixing bugs and balance issues.

The goal is to have DayZ 1.0 out by the end of the year. Once it is, the team can then get back to adding in new features, which will arrive as free updates.

The beta will add changes that fans have been hankering after for a while, including base building, the ability to run your own server, and mod support.

DayZ has had a weird and cool path in development, starting as a mod for ARMA 2, Bohemia quickly started making a standalone game, with modder Dean ‘Rocket’ Hall at the head of the project.

It’s been a long time in alpha because of its complex architecture: supporting a large number of players on a massive island stuffed with items to scavenge. It’s similar, in this way, to PUBG – another game to spring from an ARMA 2 mod.
