Developers must release a game which receives review scores of 90 or above in order for their game to pick up the attention of consumers, Crytek exec producer Nathan Camarillo has told CVG.
Camarillo was responding to a recent claim from EA Partners boss David DeMartini that Crysis 2 will average out with a review score of 90 per cent.
“We’re going to put out the best game that we can make and that’s probably over a 90 rated so it’s a fair statement to make,” said Camarillo.
“It’s up to the reviewers obviously. I hope he didn’t jinx us.”
The need to have your game score in the 90s goes beyond Crysis 2 and the FPS genre, claimed Camarillo.
“I think you have to be 90 plus to make an impact in any genre now. The quality bar is so high and publishers and developers have put so much effort against high quality games.”
“If you want to be recognised at all, regardless of genre, like anything you need to create the highest quality product possible and anything else is not going to get noticed.”
Crysis 2 is set for release on March 25 for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.
In the competitive core gamer segment we’d agree that review scores do have an importance – not just because it makes us feel that our work has meaning – but marketing is also vital at ensuring the right people know about your game.
Then there’s the need to have your game hit stores at a time which isn’t overcrowded or going up against a title which appeals to the same audience – a prime example of this going wrong is the February 25 launch of Epic Games’ Bulletstorm and Sony’s Killzone 3, surely a recipe for the EA Partners title to lose out to Sony’s triple-A platform exclusive.
