Nintendo’s big moment at the VGX Awards on Saturday night was somewhat lacklustre, using the time to reveal Cranky Kong as a playable character in upcoming Wii U platformer Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze.

Cranky, who uses a cane to jump higher, joins a playable character roster of Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong and Dixie.

The grumpy ape first appeared as the original Donkey Kong all the way back in Nintendo’s arcade game, throwing barrels in the direction of Jumpman – now more famous as Mario. He was later introduced as Cranky Kong in SNES platformer Donkey Kong Country.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime was in attendance to talk up the imminent platformer, but was hesitant to say anything about a new Metroid game from Retro – although he was wearing a Metroid pin.
