Concept art of a cancelled Zelda game from the Metroid Prime studio is a glimpse of a darker Zelda story that would have explored the origins of Ganon (via GameSpot).

Shinesparkers, a Metroid fansite, uncovered the pieces produced by former Retro Studios pre-production artist, Sammy Hall. Here they are:

Concept art offers an insight into the final product, and so these pieces are not exactly how the game would have looked if it made it to completion. Yet, these artworks are bold and stunning, and show a dark spin on the adventure series. “Zelda games have wacky weird stuff, and this game was setting out to be ten times weirder,” said Hill in the description of one. This game would have been an action-RPG which followed Sheik, the alter-ego of Zelda, and set in a time where Ganon is being birthed by the Dark Gerudo.

Hill no longer works in the games industry, and Retro Studios is presently developing Metroid Prime 4. The game has had a tumultuous time of it, having been revealed in 2017 and then scrapped in 2018. The studio has been actively hiring for the project, and recently welcomed new staff with credits on Crysis 3, DC Universe Online, Epic Mickey, and New Super Lucky’s Tale. Hopefully, Nintendo will offer an update on the game’s status in June, but rumours claim that the company is cancelling its standard Direct showcase.
