Codemasters has admitted players of DiRT 3 on PS3 will be unable to take the game online until the PlayStation Store is restored, after confirming it can’t temporarily disable the VIP Pass system.

Warner came up against the same problem with the launch of Mortal Kombat, but was able to disable the need for an online pass to be activated on the PS Store, allowing PS3 gamers to rip apart online opponents.

However, no such quick fix is possible with DiRT 3.

“We’ve looked into doing something similar for DiRT 3 but it’s not technically possible,” Codemasters told Eurogamer. “It’s hard-coded into the game.”

“Changing this would require considerable development time and a patch which would need to go through the submission process. This in itself would be a longer process that waiting for Sony to bring the PSN Store back online.”

News of DiRT 3’s PS3 problem was confirmed to VideoGamer.com yesterday, with the publisher stating DiRT 3 online play on PS3 is impossible until the PS Store returns – at the time it wasn’t clear if a temporary work around could be achieved.
