Brilliant first-person-shooter Call of Duty 4 was 2007’s biggest selling game, publisher Activision has claimed.
CoD4, as fans affectionately call it, sold “in excess of seven million units according to the NPD Group, Chart Track and the GFK Group” worldwide.
Activision’s claim that it was 2007’s number one selling game in terms of units worldwide suggests it sold more than Microsoft’s blockbuster FPS Halo 3 during the same period.
Even more astonishing is that CoD4 has sold more than Halo 3 in a shorter space of time. CoD4 was released in November 2007, whereas Halo 3 was released two months earlier, in September 2007, giving it a two month head start.
Recently Microsoft announced that CoD4 had overtaken Halo 3 for the first time as Xbox LIVE’s most popular game, based on unique users.
“We’re very excited about this achievement especially given so many competitive titles this year,” said Will Kassoy, senior vice president, global brand management, Activision Publishing, Inc.
“Consumer and critics agree that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is one of the best games ever created and further establishes Call of Duty as one of the premier brands in the industry. This ground-breaking game and franchise continue to establish new standards by which all other action games will be judged.”
