Clair Obscur Expedition 33 has been the biggest marvel of the year so far. It is the leading contender for all the game of the year awards, and many involved in the gaming industry have praised it with other developers hailing it as a strong message to bosses that gamers don’t want live-service slop. It is a phenomenal world and experience, and the developer has fortunately confirmed that Clair Obscur Expedition 33 is “not the end” of the franchise as it’s just “one of the stories” Sandfall want to tell.

Expedition 33 is “not the end” of Clair Obscur franchise

Recently, YouTuber, MrMattyPlays, interviewed Clair Obscur Expedition 33 game director, Guillaume Broche. During the interview, MrMattyPlays asked what’s next, and the director confirmed there are plans for more Clair Obscur.

Broche highlighted that “Clair Obscur is the franchise name,” and that “Expedition 33 is one of the stories that we want to tell in this franchise”. While this is good news, don’t expect the next game or story to come out anytime soon.

While Sandfall Interactive want to tell more stories within the Clair Obscur franchise, Broche stated it’s “too soon to announce” what the next entry “will look like and what the concept will be”.

It’s possible we could get DLC as previously lead writer, Jennifer Svedberg-Yen, teased Sandfall Interactive “always said if there is strong desire from the players that we would love to do something more, and based on the response so far, I’d say chances are good”.

While the possibility of DLC can’t be ruled out, it seems based on the director’s comments that Sandfall are planning to release more entirely new games set in the Clair Obscur franchise. Future entries will likely include entirely new characters as Broche told MrMattyPlays that he prefers to forget his previous work when he “writes sequels”. This suggests that Clair Obscur could become a series similar to Final Fantasy where the name remains but the setting, characters, and story is almost always entirely different.

In other Expedition 33 news, Sandfall have confirmed they have “no real plans” to expand the size of their development team following the game’s success.
