Clair Obscur Expedition 33 is the favorite to win Game of the Year at this year’s Game Awards, but Sandfall Interactive are rooting for another indie masterpiece to win the coveted prize instead. Ever since releasing earlier this year, Expedition 33 has been showered in praise by the entire video games industry. Fellow developers have used its success as a message to publishers that gamers don’t want live service slop, meanwhile, JRPG juggernaut Square Enix has acknowledged its success in comparison to Final Fantasy, too. While many are rooting for Clair Obscur Expedition 33 to win Game of the Year, Sandfall Interactive already feel fulfilled.

Clair Obscur Expedition 33 devs rooting for other game to win GOTY

PCGamesN recently interviewed Sandfall’s CEO and creative director Guillaume Broche and COO Francois Meurisse. During this interview, Sandfall revealed that they are “starting to work on the next game,” promising it will be “crazy” and “artsy”. They also discussed potentially winning Game of the Year.

The creative director said GOTY “isn’t something we really aim for [as] it should just be a consequence of making a good game, not really the goal”. Broche added that the studio feels “we’ve already achieved so much more than we wanted to achieve”.

There has been endless praise since the game launched, and Sandfall have “received so many beautiful messages from players around the world saying that the game changed their lives and helped them through tough times”. Broche said that rather than for rewards and accolades, he is creating games to “produce some real emotional resonance with people [and that Expedition 33] was already a win because we’ve achieved this, so the award would be a nice little bonus”.

Lastly, Broche revealed that he is personally rooting for Megabonk. The creative director said, “In terms of [personal picks], I don’t know if it’s a serious one, but I’m spending way too much time on Megabonk right now”. Broche further joked “It’s my life”.

Megabonk is available on Steam where it has a ‘very positive’ reception from fans. It’s developed by vedinad, and it is an indie roguelike survival game where you combat against hordes of enemies and bosses in randomly generated maps. The game has proven incredibly addictive for many, and it is something that will presumably be nominated for indie game of the year at Geoff Keighley’s show in December.

In other Clair Obscur Expedition 33 news, the developer has explained why there is “no correct canon ending” for the game, and Sandfall has also said that Expedition 33 is “not the end” of the Clair franchise.
