China’s online gaming market grew 32 per cent in 2011 to $6.6 billion, according to a study by firm Pearl Research, GamesIndustry International reports.

According to the study, markets of casual games, MMOs, social titles, and web-based games made up over $5.3 billion for numerous firms such as Changyou and Perfect World.

Additionally $800 million in revenues was made through web-based games, 60 per cent of which were RPGs.

Pearl Research goes on to suggest the market will continue to grow to $9.2 billion by the end of 2014 based on its current trajectory.

Last year China also saw the release of World of Warcraft expansion Cataclysm for the first time, a title that had previously been postponed due to strict standards by the country’s Ministry of Culture which enforced a number of changes to the game.
