Industry legend Jon Carmack has expressed regret over the length of RAGE’s seven year development cycle. He blamed that time frame on the constant drive for top tier technology and tools, and reinforced the importance of creativity.

Speaking in an interview with CVG, Carmack said: “Every aspect of Rage could be made better if we wanted to spend another two years on it, but it’s not the optimal use of [our] resources. I’d be happier if we produced two games in that time. And that’s actually my personal marching orders for technology development going forward.”

Carmack wants id to spend money on high performance PCs at the start of a project so the studio can iterate the gameplay cycle more freely and the designers can begin the testing process more swiftly.

“While I plan to the do more graphics stuff – I hope to do mega geometry in some form or another, getting it so that our content creators can create better content faster is more important,” he said.

RAGE is slated for a September 16 release for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
