Following news that Capcom is to launch a Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix beta for Xbox 360, there’s been a slight outcry by PlayStation 3 gamers devastated that their console won’t also be getting the beta test.

In order to clear up the reasons for the Xbox 360 only beta, Christian Svensson, Capcom’s vice president of strategic planning & business development, has given a bunch of reasons why the beta couldn’t happen on the PS3.

The biggest reason appears to be how heavily resource constrained the project has become. Svensson notes that it’s already gone over budget and the cheapest way to get the beta out to a global audience was through the Xbox 360.

“… even if it were possible for Sony to do, it would require 3 submissions (US, Europe, Asia/Japan) to reach the same global audience we can with MS in a single test and global submission,” explained Svensson.

He also explained that in an ideal world they would have “done a beta on each” platform. However, this “probably would have pushed the project back another few months”.

Although only Xbox 360 gamers will get to play the game early in the beta, the data collected by Capcom will be used to unsure the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions are improved.

“The beta for 360 will absolutely help the PS3,” said Svensson. “There is code parity across the two and any issues found in 360 will be fixed in PS3. So while PS3 owners won’t be able to participate in the beta, they will still benefit in the finished product.”

There’s still no word on exactly when the beta will begin, but sometime following the release of Commando 3 this spring seems likely.
