UPDATE: Codemasters has told Eurogamer it has no involvement with the project and that the publisher has no plans to publish GFI’s Cannon Fodder 3 in Europe.

Russia-based GFI has announced the development of Cannon Fodder 3.

The immaculately written press release promises we’ll get “classic isometric environment in full 3D, weather effects, change of time, destructible environment, physical water – all this and a lot more you’ll find in Cannon Fodder 3.”

A release date has not been announced.

The original Cannon Fodder was released in 1993 by Sensible Software, and is the kind of game people who remember the Amiga wax lyrical about on a semi-regular basis. The series, a top-down strategy game where you attempt to manoeuvre packs of squaddies through various environments, is notable for its wry sense of humour.

In recent years, Codemasters has cancelled updated versions of the original for PS2 and PSP.

Other recent titles developed by GFI include The Precursors, White Gold, Schoolmates: from Past to Present, Who Said Meow?, Warfare Reloaded and THEY’RE ALIVE!

Distribution plans haven’t been announced, but we think a new Cannon Fodder would probably stand a better chance as a download title. I’m slightly concerned by GFI’s involvement, but at least they’ve not announced a gritty first-person squad shooter.
