Following last night’s trailer, Treyarch has now revealed Call of Duty: Vanguard’s Zombies mode in more detail.

Continuing the ongoing Dark Aether storyline, the first chapter available at launch is known as Der Anfang. We’re introduced to the Dark Aether entities – powerful beings who bond to mortals and grant them powers via artefacts. One of these is the evil Kortifex the Deathless, who’s hell-bent on destroying the mortal realm.

It’s not great news then to find he’s bonded to SS officer Oberführer Wolfram Von List thanks to the latter plundering the aforementioned artefacts. Luckily, Kortifex’s fellow entities—Saraxis the Shadow, Norticus the Conqueror, Inviktor the Destroyer, and Bellekar the Warlock—are in revolt against him, and so they join forces with the Special Forces operatives to stop him.

That’s the setup then, and it means you’ll pick one of those entities before you head into Stalingrad. You’ll be able to pick up Runes, which allow the Dark Aether entities bonded to you to use their powers. We’re not told specifics, but it’ll apparently be important to how the Call of Duty: Vanguard Zombies story plays out.

Along with the classic upgrade machines, there’s also a new Altar of Covenants. This is a new system that randomises every time you come back from an objective. You’ll have to hunt down sacrificial hearts, but spending them at these Altars gives you one of three random upgrades.  The mode will continue to be expanded upon post launch, of course.

Call of Duty: Vanguard‘s Zombies mode launches alongside the rest of the game on November 5 on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and PC.
