Subscribers to Call of Duty: Elite, the upcoming social networking/stat-tracking service for the franchise, will be given exclusive access to an upcoming Call of Duty web TV series.
In an interview with The Guardian, Activision Publishing head Eric Hirshberg stated: “We have engaged some top Hollywood talent to create linear video content that will be exclusive to Elite members. That content is inspired by Call of Duty.”
“If you’re a sports fan, there are lots of ways for you to connect with that hobby, that passion, not just on the day that the games are played, but throughout the week, and we wanted to give [Call of Duty players] real entertainment value.”
Hirshberg noted that we’ll learn further details on the show “later in the year.”
Activision announced Call of Duty: Elite yesterday. Analysts expect the service to gain 2-4 million subscribers in its first year.
This follows the approach of the likes of Ubisoft and Namco Bandai who have both set up their own TV and film production studios. Other games-based web series such as the recent Mortal Kombat Legacy have proved immensely successful.
