Dataminers have spotted a battle royale mode in the beta source code for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, fuelling rumours that it could be coming to the game in its launch or in the future (via VG247).
Though the Modern Warfare beta is done and dusted, dataminers over at VG Sources are as busy as bees. The idea of a battle royale mode has been mentioned before, when a Call of Duty YouTuber claimed that the mode would be arriving as a standalone game in early 2020. With all leaks, this was taken with a pinch of salt, but the YouTuber had been spot on predicting this year’s Call of Duty title before it was officially announced.
Infinity Ward had been cagey about battle royale, too, and said that players would ‘have to wait and see’ whether it would be included in Modern Warfare. And now, this uncovered code suggests that it was at the very least considered by the developer as one of 40 multiplayer modes identified by dedicated dataminers.
VG Source clarifies that these modes may be relics of an earlier moment in Modern Warfare’s development, or may have been put in the beta for testing purposes. It’s also possible that a collection of the multiplayer modes will come to the game in new competitive seasons, and of course, all of the code is subject to change. But, battle royale is there with the phrase, ‘Eliminate everyone. Survive.’
We will have to wait and see if battle royale does touch down in Modern Warfare’s multiplayer, as the datamined code has not been acknowledged by Activision or Infinity Ward.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare launches for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC on October 25.
