Activision has announced the specifics of its new DLC strategy for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, detailing that it all revolves around regular but weeny chunks of content.
They’re referring to them as “Content Drops”.
The first two, ahem, Content Drops, will be multiplayer maps. Liberation plops you into Central Perk during an open conflict, and features corridors long enough that snipers would jump for joy if they weren’t too feeble to actually stand. The second map, Piazza, is an intimate shooting ground set in an Italian resort and promises close-quarters vertical combat.
These will start on January 24 for Premium subscribers to Call of Duty: Elite. There will be one new, unspecific blob of content in February, followed by two more in March. Activision will then release one new content drop for Call of Duty: Elite Premium subscribers every month until September.
As for people without Premium subscriptions to Call of Duty: Elite, Activision will be rounding up its Content Drops into regular-sized DLC packs to be sold individually from March – which will presumably be the culmination of the first five Content Drops.
Xbox 360 owners will still get first access to any and all Modern Warfare 3 content – both Content Drops and regular DLC – as per the requirements of a lucrative cash deal between Microsoft and Activision.
A press release accompanying the announcement simply states that PS3 owners will receive the content at “a later time”.
As there’s no Call of Duty: Elite support for PC, those players will presumably just have to wait for the content compilations.
The Modern Warfare 3 DLC is being co-developed by Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer Games and Raven Software.
VideoGamer.com recently awarded Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 ninth place in its Games of 2011.
