Call of Duty: Ghosts has been rated 16 by the Pan European Game Information (PEGI) ratings system, Eurogamer reports.
This is despite promotional material for the game featuring an 18 certificate.
The lower rating makes Ghosts the first 16-rated home console Call of Duty in the last five years.
Since PEGI took over age ratings for video games, 2011’s Modern Warfare 3 and 2012’s Black Ops 2 were awarded 18 ratings. The BBFC previously gave 2009’s Modern Warfare 2 an 18 and 2010’s Black Ops an 18 certificate.
However, PEGI did rate last year’s PlayStation Vita title Call of Duty Black Ops: Declassified a 16.
Call of Duty: Ghosts will be released November 5.
It will be interesting to see how the mainstream media handles this, as PEGI’s rating does allow children to play a game in which players gun down enemies in real world situations.
