Call of Duty’s expensive microtransactions have been suspected of using AI-generated skins in recent months, and it seems that Activision has finally admitted to the use of generative art within the hugely popular shooter series.

Call of Duty does use generative AI

Following a new Steam imitative that requires games on the storefront to disclose use of AI, the official Call of Duty page has a disclosure for its use of artificial intelligence in the game. While Activision hasn’t claimed which cosmetics or even sound effects are the result of generative AI, the disclosure is now there for all to see.

“Our team uses generative AI tools to help develop some in game assets,” reads the new statement under the page’s “AI Generated Content Disclosure” section.

The most infamous example of AI generated artwork in the Call of Duty series came during December’s Season 1 Reloaded Christmas update. The game’s loading screen was swapped with an image of a Zombie Santa Clause that had six fingers on one hand—a telltale sign of artificial intelligence.

Lame.

With SteamDB now allowing players to filter games, or hide titles, that make use of generative AI, more players have noticed the disclosure on the Call of Duty page. As it turns out, the disclosure was officially added to the game back on January 27th.

For a game as popular as Call of Duty, and one that makes as much money as the popular shooter franchise, the inclusion of AI-generated artwork has been a sore point for many fans. After all, if you’re charging players to use skins in game, then you should be paying someone to make them.
