Call of Duty campaigns have always had difficulty options, but the upcoming mind-bending Black Ops 7 story won’t. After decades of giving players the choice of how hard they want their CoD campaign – who else spent ages pinned down in World at War’s Eviction mission? – but no longer.
In a surprising move, and a confusing one, Treyarch has decided to forego difficulty options within Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. Why, you ask? Because it’s a co-op game now. Yeah, I know, it makes no sense.
Black Ops 7 abandons difficulty modes
Speaking to IGN, associate creative director Miles Leslie explained that the difficulty of the new CoD is simply “baked in”. Instead of allowing players to ramp up the difficulty as they want, it will change depending on how many people are playing the game in co-op.
“You cannot pick a difficulty like past games. We’ve baked it in because you have to approach a co-op campaign differently, and we wanted to make sure the missions felt right for solo players,” Leslie said. “We’re not forgetting about you, we love you — but also because it is a social experience we want to make sure it’s fun, but the right amount of challenging for two, three, and four players as well.”
This means that there will be zero Veteran difficulty runs of the Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 campaign simply because that option doesn’t exist. While CoD campaigns aren’t as popular or as replayable as the games’ multiplayer offerings, they’re beloved parts of the series, and Veteran mode always offers an exhilarating challenge.
Additionally, it doesn’t really make sense that the introduction of co-op inherently means the removal of options. After all, countless multiplayer games with co-op campaigns – the entire Halo series, for example – allow players to choose their level of challenge. Hopefully, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 will introduce additional difficulty options post-launch.
