Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare runs at native 1080p on PS4 and a “scalable 1080” on Xbox One, Sledgehammer Games has confirmed.

The adaptive resolution means that the Xbox One version will automatically scale the resolution up and down “dependent of the performance hit on the scene”. The lowest the resolution will ever go is 1360×1080, Sledgehammer says, which the developer claims is “50 per cent higher” than the Xbox One version of Call of Duty: Ghosts.

“I can tell you the frame rate is rock solid on both Xbox One and PlayStation 4, 60 frames per second,” Sledgehammer co-founder Michael Condrey told Metro. “That’s kind of the heart and soul of Call Of Duty. You’ve probably heard that for years, right? PS4 runs at 1080p and Xbox One runs at 1080 scalable. Which will scale from 1360 all the way up to true 1080. So 1360×1080 up to 1920×1080.”

The resolution will change in real-time “on a frame by frame basis,” Condrey adds.

“So Xbox One at times will run at true 1080 and sometimes it’ll run at 1360×1080 and scale in between those two marks,” he continues. “Its minimum threshold is 1360×1080 but the majority of time it runs above that. And 1360×1080 as the low bar is 50 per cent higher resolution than Ghosts at 900.” [Note: Condrey appears to have made a mistake with Ghosts’ resolution. The game ran at 720p on Xbox One and 1080p on PS4.]

The adaptive resolution suggests that Sledgehammer has been able to optimise Advanced Warfare significantly since its E3 and Gamescom showings, where it was reported to run at 900p.
