Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has joined the ranks of Microsoft’s perpetually-swelling Xbox One backwards compatibility lineup.

Those of you who own a copy of the 2007 first-person shooter for Xbox 360 can now pop the disc straight into your Xbox One and fire it up, or if you own a digital copy can begin downloading it to your hard drive.

Alternatively, Microsoft is now flogging the game on the Xbox Store if you don’t already own it, and it can be picked up on the cheap as part of the Xbox Spring sale. Obviously, there’s not much point in getting the game if you already own Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, but it’s still handy for those who have the original game and haven’t yet upgraded.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was released on PlayStation 3, PC, and Xbox 360 and is widely considered one of the best games of the last generation of consoles, as well as being responsible for reinvigorating the Call of Duty franchise at the time of its release. Since then we’ve come full circle, as last year’s outing took players back to World War II battlefields for the first time in a decade.

Rumours have indicated that publisher Activision is looking to remaster Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, although this has yet to be officially confirmed.Â
