The all-new Burnout game is being developed from the ground up for the next-gen platforms, and promises new open-world gameplay that removes the need to continuously jump in and out of menus. Paradise City, with an infrastructure of traffic-heavy roads, is where the action will take place, and every intersection of the city said to be a potential crash junction.

When players enter the city they'll be given a drivers license onto which their most aggressive, reckless and destructive moments behind the wheel will be recorded. The law isn't interested in what goes on in Paradise City, but players will have to square up to the city's most infamous racers - and finishing first isn't always their primary concern.

"Burnout 5 is a complete reinvention of the series, built from the ground up for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360," said Alex Ward, director of game design at Criterion Games. "To create truly next-generation gameplay, we needed to create a truly next-generation game, from top to bottom."

Being the first truly next-gen Burnout game, the crash system has been given an overhaul and now allows cars to be literally torn apart, creating the most explosive pile-ups in the series' history.

Burnout 5 is once again in the hands of Criterion and is scheduled for release in 2007.
