Bungie is working on an all-new game engine that will be used to create the studio’s project for publisher Activision, communications manager Brian Jarrard has told Develop.

Jarrard said that creating its own engine is part of the “independent spirit” at the studio.

“Just like we don’t want to develop a game off someone else’s IP, we want to push our own technology in the same way,” he explained. “That’s going to be our position for the foreseeable future.”

Jarrard added that the new engine is “in development” and the team is currently “at the end of a pre-production mode”.

With the completion of Halo: Reach, Bungie’s final Halo game, Jarrard said the “full weight” of the studio is now on the next project and “real work is underway”.
