Before Bungie decided on Halo: Reach, a prequel to events first told in Halo: Combat Evolved, the team considered the idea of making Halo 4 and continuing the story of Master Chief.

Speaking to MTV Multiplayer at E3 earlier this month, Brian Jarrard, Bungie community director, said: “Even before the idea to build a game based around Reach came about, a lot of other concepts were explored, up to and including a proper Halo 4, where Master Chief was going to wake up from cryo-sleep and we were going to tell that story.”

However, in the end, “it just wasn’t as interesting to the team to just pick up where that left off and all the baggage that came with it,” explained Jarrard.

The iconic action hero won’t even make a guest appearance in Halo: Reach, with Jarrard confirming to MTV that Master Chief is nowhere in the game.

Whether or not Microsoft, through its 343 Industries, will continue the story of Master Chief remains to be seen.
