Elden Ring Nightreign has only just received Duos mode, following a minor delay due to a surprise tsunami warning. While the brilliant roguelike game now allows players to dive in with slightly smaller groups, one player has committed to the opposite, doubling the max player count of online matches.

Mod creator Yui, the mind behind the Elden Ring Nightreign Seamless Co-Op mod, has changed tact as of late. While the mod was originally designed to allow two-player matches, the official release of Duos has caused the mod maker to pivot.

Play Elden Ring Nightreign as a six-player team

In a post on their Patreon, modder Yui explained that the mod was originally “designed to just bridge the gap between the game’s launch and the developers adding official 2-player support”. However, now that the game does officially support smaller teams, the mod is sizing them up.

“Now that this has been done, the only real use this mod has over the vanilla game is mod support and increasing player cap,” the modder said.

At the time of writing, the Elden Ring Nightreign Seamless Co-Op mod now has a maximum player count of six players. While modders have claimed that even 100 player modes could be possible for maximum chaos, the game already becomes significantly buggier when six players are teaming up.

With this knowledge, the modder will instead focus on supporting the mod with additional bug fixes after which “the project will be put in maintenance mode.”

“Whilst in theory this player cap can be expanded further, beyond 6 players seems overkill and even with a very high scaling curve for enemies,” the modder told fans. “The game just becomes comically easy.”

Additionally, the modder explained that they will not be adding “PvP and/or random matchmaking” to the enhanced player count mod. I mean, let’s be honest, that sounds like a lot of work for not a lot of people.

The Elden Ring Seamless co-op mod does allow you to customise more than just your player count. Included in the mod files are easy-to-change scaling options that allow you to increase the difficulty of the game to account for your larger team sizes.

While you can change the scaling options, by default, the mod “will be 100% of the vanilla game scaling formula applied per additional player”.

“For example, if an enemy gets 25% more health per player in the base game, setting health_scaling to 50 would mean a gain of 12.5% health, and if you set it to 1000, it’d get 250% more health, etc,” the modder explained.

Elden Ring Nightreign with six players sounds like an absolute blast, and I’m very excited to try this out if I can manage to wrangle five people to play at the exact same time. In this day and age, that’ll be a miracle.
