Frozenbyte, the developer of the Trine series, just announced and released its new PvP brawler Boreal Blade for the Nintendo Switch.

The story of Boreal Blade follows the culture of the Norvalgians. Norvalgians are dedicated debaters, and whenever a question must be resolved, they’ll enter debating arenas and argue their point. With the pointy end. Combat boasts ‘hundreds of weapons, shields, pieces of armour and battle items’ to dominate the battlefield in a unique, personal style defined by a simple control scheme. Along with their weaponry and armour, players will be able to extensively customise their warrior with jewellery, facial hair, variable hairdos, and a rainbow of dyes. After all, you can’t fight crime if you ain’t cute.

There are two modes: Team Deathmatch and Boreal Battle. Team Deathmatch is rather unambiguous, however, the first warrior to reach 20 eliminations will be crowned victorious. Boreal Battle pits two teams of three players against each other, who must defend a banner from the opposition over several turns. In the trailer, the Norvalg environments and arenas are diverse and are inspired by Norse mythology, albeit in a picturesque art style.

There’s a demo out now which, although limiting a few features, will carry over progress into the full game. And, a PC beta testing session will come to Steam soon; sign ups are being coordinated through the game’s official Discord server.

Boreal Blade is out now for the Nintendo Switch. Watch the announcement trailer below.
