A free-to-play, browser-based 16-bit version of Borderlands has been released by Gearbox.

The game is an overhead, arcade-style shooter, in which you play as one of Borderland’s four lead characters and must survive waves of enemies.

Much like the game it is based on, expect lots of weapon drops and level upgrades.

“Borderlands wasn’t always the slick, handsome bastard of a game it is today! Go old skool and play the 1989 16-bit original to see how it all began. I can’t believe how young I look!” said popular robot Claptrap.

You’ll find the game here.

Borderlands 2 will be released for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC on September 21.
