Gearbox reports that it has finished work on Borderlands 2 and will now turn its attention to the Mechromancer.

As Randy Pitchford recently explained, Borderlands 2 has been designed to allow the addition of extra characters, post-release. The first of these extra characters will be the Mechromancer, a girl capable of summoning a robot buddy, Deathtrap (styled as D374-TP).

At the time, Pitchford said that the team would only begin work on the Mechromancer once the main game was complete. Now that the game has been sent for certification, they’re free to develop the fifth character – and potentially others, after that.

The Mechromancer will be a free download for members of the Borderlands 2 Premier Club, i.e. people who pre-order the game.

Borderlands 2 will be released September 21 for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
