Bluepoint Games, known for its high definition remasters of Metal Gear Solid, Shadow of the Colossus, and Uncharted, is very pleased with the progress of its PlayStation 5 project (via SegmentNext).
When the PlayStation 5 was officially announced, developers collaborating with Sony gushed about the console’s technical prowess and potential for new gameplay experiences. It was here that we learned that Bluepoint Games has been tasked with something special for the next-generation hardware. Understandably, the company has kept shtum on what this game actually is, but SegmentNext got the chance to seek a little extra information in an interview with president Marco Thrush.
“We [Bluepoint Games] originally remastered Shadow of the Colossus for the PS3 and then remade it for the PS4. It’s the only one we’ve touched twice and to date it is our greatest achievement, so it’s easy to say that is our personal favourite,” he explained. “However, there’s no question in our minds that our current project will become the achievement we’re most proud of.”
Lovely. Good job, everyone. But. Doesn’t that wording sound a little strange? You would usually use a superlative. For example, “Sonic is the fastest hedgehog”, or “Go Vacation is the best game ever made.” To be grammatically correct, Thrush could have said, “our current project will become our proudest achievement,” or, “our current project will become the achievement we’re proudest of.” Yet, he didn’t.
This could be a quirk of his speech, sure, but the developer has been dropping curious hints on its social media channels that are driving fans round the bend. Here’s one they made last month:
To classics we play
Our blood, sweat, tears give thanks! To family & fans, eager you stay
Cheers rekindle flames – thanks!Today feast, tomorrow rest
Soon the beast freed from jestTemptation we shun
Then onto the next
We reset to further adorn the genesis
An era reborn pic.twitter.com/Wy7pZQeoF7— Bluepoint Games (@bluepointgames) November 29, 2019
Lots of people had lots of theories, pulling apart the words to find clues to The Legend of Dragoon, SOCOM, and Metal Gear Solid. The prevailing notion is that Bluepoint Games is remastering two classic games on Sony’s next-generation hardware, and one of these is Demon’s Souls. The studio is doing its utmost to keep within those non-disclosure agreements, but it seems that Thrush hinted at Demon’s Souls again in the interview. Instead of saying “proudest”, he used “most proud”, which some are taking as a reference to the Soul of a Proud Knight in spiritual successor to Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls.
Who knows? Well, Bluepoint Games and Sony. But with these cryptic hints-but-not-hints and a while to wait before we get a glimpse at the PS5 in action, we’ll have to twiddle our thumbs and wait for an update. In the interview, Thrush made it clear that Bluepoint Games can’t say anything concrete until Sony gives it the green light. However, the team would give a Half-Life 1 remake a go, and given its past performance of high definition remasters, it’s an interesting possibility.
