Blizzard would not have been able to dominate the MMO sector had Electronic Arts properly capitalised on the genre, according to industry veteran Richard Garriott.

Speaking in an interview with IndustryGamers, Garriott explained that with each generation of technology, companies have risen up to take advantage of the changes while other older firms had trouble transitioning.

“I mean,” he says, “if you think about that Blizzard wouldn’t be able to be nearly as dominant in the MMO space if Electronic Arts had managed to capitalise on it properly.”

EA is only now becoming a prominent force in the world of MMOs, as the publisher of Star Wars: The Old Republic and The Secret World – the former thought to be the most expensive MMO ever made.

The success of Star Wars: The Old Republic is likely to be the deciding factor for EA, particularly with World of Warcraft’s dwindling subscription-base.
