World of Warcraft developer Blizzard is currently working on a free-to-play title, according to sources close to Develop.
The studio has plans to begin developing both subscription-based and freemium titles, the sources said anonymously.
Blizzard has so far declined to comment, however this follows in line with the firm’s rumoured plans for its currently unannounced MMO Project Titan.
Titan is thought to include in-game advertising as a way of off-setting subscription costs.
Additionally, the company has been dipping its toes into the world of free gaming with the introduction of 20-level long free trials to World of Warcraft.

More surprising would be if Blizzard wasn’t already testing the waters for new business models. They still have a hefty subscriber-base but with the market of free-to-play MMOs proving successful, it’s highly unlikely they wouldn’t pursue at least microtransactions for the sake of good business.
