Blizzard is not tracking World of Warcraft subscription numbers “obsessively” according to lead quest designer Dave Kosak.
In reply to a question regarding whether the available content in Patch 4.3 will be enough to keep users subscribing until the upcoming expansion, Kosak told VideoGamer.com:
“What we do is we always look at what’s best for the game. You know, we’re not tracking subscription numbers obsessively, we’re just trying to make the best game we can.”
He went on to state that the studio has plans to roll out more regular content updates during expansions, however.
“We’ve definitely said publicly that we’re trying to roll out content at a faster pace, with a better schedule so players have more to do and it’s certainly something we’re looking at. And we think that’s just good for the game, that’s not an ‘Oh no we have to do this to keep subscribers!’ It’s a better game, it’s the game we want to play and should have more frequent updates.”
He added that since the recent and final content patch for World of Warcraft: Cataclysm “we’ve definitely seen a lotem> of activity on the servers, for sure. We’ve definitely seen a lot of people checking it out.”
This is positive news after an apparent exodus from the game last year after losing 1.1 million subscribers.

A few analysts stated before the launch of Star Wars: The Old Republic that WoW would lose another large chunk of its userbase to the BioWare MMO, but as of yet there are no available stats to back this up.
